England boss Hodgson thrilled for Tottenham's Townsend, Everton's Barkley

Roy Hodgson was absolutely delighted for England periphery players Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley on Tuesday night.

The talented midfield pair played integral roles in the Three Lions' 1-1 friendly with Italy in Turin with Tottenham winger Townsend landing a stunning 79th-minute goal after replacing Fabian Delph just nine minutes earlier.

The performance of both Townsend and Everton young gun Barkley, who came on for Theo Walcott ten minutes into the second half, were praised by Hodgson who is looking to the duo to become more and more involved with the Three Lions setup down the track.

"He's with us because of the qualities he brings," said Hodgson of Townsend.

"He's got that ability to turn very quickly and run at enormous pace and with skill at defenders, and that's something defenders don't like. We've always appreciated that quality he has. In a squad of 20-odd players, there should be a place for guys like him because he's a game-changer.

"You could say the same about Ross Barkley, another potential game-changer who came on and did extremely well despite the fact he's been criticised for his performances at Everton recently.

"I'm delighted for the two guys. I'm looking further forward than this match against Italy, and I'm just hoping these guys stay on track."
