England boss Fabio Capello has invited controversy by launching his World Cup 'Capello index' yesterday.

The England manager launched the "Capello Index" on Monday, which will rate performances in South Africa this summer and in the Premier League next season.

Capello insisted the index is "good for the fans", but it could also be a source of potential embarrassment with the player ratings reportedly available within two hours of matches ending.

Capello, who is due to unveil his 30-man provisional England squad later on Tuesday, said at Monday's launch: "I know the players, I follow the players, I check everything.

"It is really important to know the players outside the pitch.

"I need to know the mentality of the group. It is really important to pick the players with the spirit of the group.

"You have to forget where you are from, which team you are from. You have to play for this shirt, for the spirit of the group. If you play you have to be happy. If you don't play you have to be happy.

"If you go to the stand you have to be happy. This is a really, really important thing."

A four-week trial for the Capello Index, which was limited to players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, rated Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Sol Campbell as the best English central defenders, ahead of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.
