Former Everton defender Earl Barrett is delighted seeing Joe Royle back with the club.
Royle has joined the club's academy setup.
Barrett, who played for the Blues legend at Everton and Oldham Athletic, told the Liverpool Echo: "I'm absolutely delighted, I think it's a brilliant appointment for both Joe and Everton.
"What I've always liked about Joe's style is that he had the knack of being your friend but you knew he was the boss and there was a line you couldn't cross.
"He knew what he wanted from his players and he was able to get the best out of them.
"He's a very witty man who is very at ease around the players and was always good at making them laugh and joining in the banter.
"He gives players lots of confidence but if he felt you weren't doing what he'd told you and not following his instructions then he would tell you in no uncertain terms.
"As a professional footballer that's what you want from your manager and you respect his opinions."
