Dundee Utd's Russell embarrassed to collect young player award

Dundee United striker Johnny Russell admits he was a bit embarrassed to collect the Scottish Premier League's Young Player of the Month award for August.

The 21-year old Terrors attacker was sent off in his club's 1-0 loss to reigning champions Rangers at Tannadice for a headbutt on Kirk Broadfoot on Saturday and said it felt a bit awkward picking up an award after admittedly letting the club down.

"The timing of this is a bit embarrassing, especially after Saturday, I let myself down and the club," he said.

"It's good to get the award, but it doesn't feel great right now.

"There's no chance I will ever do anything like that again. It's a lesson and I will learn from it.

"As soon as it happened I knew straight away what I had done. It was stupid, a moment of absolute madness.

"It cost us any chance of getting anything from the game because when you go down to ten men it is going to be hard for everybody. I have said sorry to the lads and to the gaffer and the fans as well. I have let everyone down.

"It's disappointing because I felt I did alright in August, and it was brilliant when I was told I was going to get the award."
