Disgraced former Sunderland winger Johnson ashamed at his actions

Adam Johnson has admitted his 'stupidity' at kissing a minor as the court case surrounding his alleged sexual activity with a child continues.

The former England and Sunderland winger told the jury in Bradford Crown Court on Monday that he made a mistake and was arrogant in his attempts to have a sexual encounter with the schoolgirl.

Prosecutor Daniel Johnson read a statement from Johnson, 28, regarding his behaviour which included kissing the girl in his Range Rover and sending inappropriate messages hinting at taking things further.

"I accept the stupidity of my actions," Thomas read from Johnson's statement.

"She's a child and ought to have been safe in my company.

"I'm ashamed that I did that and I know I shouldn't have been doing that."

Regarding his flirtatious messaging, the statement added: "Embarrassed. Awful. I shouldn't have ever done it."

Johnson also offered that becoming a professional footballer has caused him to become arrogant which contributed to the indiscretion.

"You get put on a pedestal. People scream your name. It's the best thing in the world," he said.

"You have everything done for you and get a lot of things easy."

The trial will continue on into it's eighth day on Tuesday.
