Disappointed Rodgers: Liverpool have duty to play out season

Brendan Rodgers will not let Liverpool's season fall away after essentially missing out on a Champions League spot.

The Reds lost 1-0 at Hull City on Tuesday night to remain seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United with four fixtures remaining.

Liverpool were looking to sneak into the top four with a strong run-in but the defeat at the hands of the Tigers makes things very difficult, however, Rodgers was staying positive.

"I spoke to the players at the end and I told them that we have an obligation to fight right to the end of the season," he said.

"We wanted to be in that top four but it was always going to be difficult for us with the way our season mapped itself out. But we are looking to get momentum to take us through to next season.

"We didn't look like scoring - we had enough of the ball but we never really threatened and we were disappointed with the goal we conceded.

"The players put great energy into the game and they worked very hard but their struggles tonight were the same as they have been for a great part of the season in terms of creativity and scoring goals."

The Reds went down to Hull after captain Michael Dawson scored his first goal for the club with a glancing header from Ahmed Elmohamady's right-wing cross in the 37th minute to lift Steve Bruce's Tigers to 15th place on the table.
