Defoe will wish Modric well if he leaves Tottenham

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe admits he is not too sure about Luka Modric's situation but says he will give the midfielder his best wishes if he does happen to leave the club.

The Croatian playmaker is reportedly on the verge of joining Real Madrid and although Defoe doesn't know what's happening, he does know that his Spurs teammate will do well if he does depart North London.

"Luka is a fantastic player. A lot has gone on. As players we don't know what's gone on," said Defoe following his winner for England in last night's friendly against Italy.

"He's been at the club - and he's been good for the club to be honest. If he does end up going, for us it is hard to lose someone like that.

"But, for him, I would say good luck to him because he's a fantastic player."
