De Guzman pleased with draw as he breaks Canada caps record

Julian De Guzman was in a positive mood following Canada's 0-0 draw with El Salvador on Tuesday.

The Canucks grabbed a valuable point in San Salvador in their second fixture of the fourth round of World Cup qualifying in what was De Guzman's 85th international cap.

Despite the scoreless draw, 34-year-old midfielder De Guzman was over the moon after breaking Paul Stalteri's previous caps record for his country.

"I definitely would have loved the three points, but the one point is still good and I can still celebrate in a nice way," De Guzman said.

"I definitely want to continue playing for my country for at least another year, and push the caps to 90 or 100.

"But the goal is to set the bar high for the young guys to break. And if they do, it shows that Canada is taking steps forward by achieving something and getting steps forward onto the big stage."

Canada sit second in Group A with four points from their two outings and next face the daunting task of hosting Mexico in March - a match which De Guzman is relishing.

"It's something we have to continue to improve on, because it's going to be tougher in places like Mexico and Honduras," he added.

"For a lot of these guys, this is new for them. They've never experienced like this before and it's definitely an eye-opener."
