DC United's Najar officially chooses Honduras

DC United youngster Andy Najar has chosen to pledge his allegiance to the Honduras national team.

The Honduran-born winger has been a US resident for the past four years and there was some hope he may choose to represent the USA national team but as reported earlier this week, he will now be seen in the white and blue of his native country.

Najar, who is expected to receive a call-up for summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup, said he made the decision based on what he felt inside.

"It was a decision that my heart told me," he said. "It came strictly from my heart.

"It was a distraction for me because that was a question I got asked constantly. I was just waiting for the right moment to make the decision.

"From the beginning, I was leaning toward Honduras," he said. "I don't think it would have been more difficult."

As for the potential call-up to the tournament, which is to be held in the USA from June 5, Najar said he would love the chance to represent Los Catrachos.

"If they call me, I am ready to represent Honduras in the Gold Cup," he added. "obviously moving forward, I probably will (have some contact from them)."
