Danny Wallace excited seeing Koeman's Southampton flying high

Southampton hero Danny Wallace is excited seeing his old club challenging for the top four this season.

Wallace was given his Southampton debut as a 16-year-old back in 1980 at Old Trafford and eventually became one of the club's senior players.

The 1984 near title success experience was the biggest highlight and he is happy to see another of his old clubs coming back.

Former Manchester United winger Wallace told the Manchester Evening News: "We had some very good players in that '84 side including Peter Shilton in goal. It all came together in that 1983-84 season. We were a small club mixing it with the big clubs. I think we should have won the title that year. We were the best team for the whole season and it was really disappointing we missed out.

"We also made it to the semi final of the FA Cup as well beating one of our title rivals Nottingham Forest on the way plus a big derby with Portsmouth. However, Everton, who won the cup, beat us after extra time at Highbury. It was so close to being an unforgettable season.

"It has been up and down for them since and after doing so well last term I was really fearful for Southampton when they sold a lot of their best players. But Koeman has really got them going. I hope they can keep it going because it would be nice to see them break up the monopoly of the big clubs at the top.

"I think it would be refreshing to see a club like Southampton in their at the end and with the prospect of European side like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich going there."
