Dalglish surprised Man Utd boss Van Gaal failed to buy experienced centre-half

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish is surprised by Manchester United's failure to buy a new centre-half.

Dalglish wrote in his column for the Mirror: "United are an interesting case. The big surprise to me is they didn't sign a proper centre-half in the summer.

"They lost huge players in Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who had been the foundation of their team for the best part of a decade. Jonny Evans has been another big loss, to injury, because of his experience.

"When you lose players like that, it's going to have an impact.

"I thought the Old Trafford club would go strong in that department in the transfer market, and bring in an experienced defender.

"Don't get me wrong. They have got Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who are really good players, and they did sign Marcos Rojo, who played very well for Argentina at the World Cup. Is he an out-and-out centre-half though?"
