Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has called on Premier League clubs to use their academy players over buying overseas players.

Hodgson says Palace will look at their own nest before parting with money this summer.

"It's no harder for us than anybody else. We are acutely aware," Hodgson told BT Sport.

"We are making big steps at the moment to improve our academy, certainly to improve the facility.

"We do believe, that we have quite a rich vein in the country in terms of being able to find players. So many top players have come through in recent years from this little portion of south-east London.

"All clubs will tell you that we need to invest in our youth, we need to invest in our own players.

"If we're going to rely on topping up your squad by going out and buying players from other clubs, then we are going to spend an awful lot more money.

"I think this period coming up, the nine games in very quick succession, it's a good opportunity to see what there is behind the first-team, players we haven't maybe dared to risk in the quest to achieve our goal, we might put some of those players in there. That could be really interesting.

"One thing that has really occurred to me, watching the Bundesliga matches, there's a lot of young players there and what interested me, in that respect, is that when we're recruiting we tend to build players up abroad: 'There's an incredible 19-year-old here, a fantastic 18-year-old there'.

"But I think maybe it's forced us to look at quite a few young players we've got and you realise there's probably a little bit more wealth in terms of our talent that we don't give credit.

"You can go out and spend a lot of money with a foreign club, whereas you can help your own club by finding a solution to a problem in your squad with one of your own young players."
