Crystal Palace boss Hodgson satisfied with Luzern preseason opener

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson was happy with his team's performance in their opening pre-season fixture against FC Luzern in the Uhrencup.

The teams were tied after 90 minutes after a header from Christian Benteke had been cancelled out by Pascal Schurpf. The match went to a penalty shootout, which was eventually won following a Wayne Hennessey save.

Speaking to CPFC.co.uk after the match, Hodgson admitted his delight. He said: "It was a pleasing result, and a pleasing performance as well. We had to use so many players – so many who haven't had much experience with the first team at all, certainly not at match level, and not even that much training with us.

"It was great that so early in pre-season we could put in such a good performance. I thought we were clearly the better side throughout the game and could have quite easily won it in the 90 minutes, but it's exciting when it goes to penalties. Certainly, it was one of the best exhibitions of penalty shoot outs I've seen, from both teams. It's nice to win it that way.

"It would have been nice to have won it in normal time, because we had two or three really good chances. There were some really excellent attacking movements – both in the first and second half, it would have been nice if one of those would have gone in, because that would have crowned some good attacking play."
