Crewe Alexandra are battling Brentford for QPR striker Rob Hulse.
Hulse is available for loan after being omitted from QPR's official 25-strong Premier League squad list.
Crewe boss Steve Davis said: "Brentford's wage budget would be a lot higher than ours, so if it was to going to happen we'd have to do something on the wages front."
