Crawley boss Gregory confesses Aston Villa mistakes

John Gregory is delighted to be back in English football with Crawley Town.

The former Aston Villa boss admits he made mistakes during his time at Villa Park.

"For half a season, we were top of the Premier League at Villa - and then I lost my way," he told the Mirror. "I made a few career decisions which were wrong and rubbed a few people up the wrong way.

"When I left Villa in 2002, I knew everything about the club - I could even tell you what Doug Ellis had for breakfast, lunch and supper."

Gregory's next two jobs, at Derby and QPR - where he was revered by fans as a player - ended unhappily and the phone stopped ringing.

He said: "I was probably tarred by the fact I got sacked at QPR. Clubs in England didn't want to know for a few years, but if you are a singer, you just want to sing. You don't care whether it's the Palladium or the working men's club at the end of the street.

"Behind my back, one or two board members I had come across were not being particularly complimentary, so I ended up working in Israel."
