Commons urges Stokes to step into Hooper's Celtic shoes

Celtic midfielder Kris Commons believes Anthony Stokes can be the perfect replacement for Gary Hooper.

With prolific marksman Hooper likely to leave Parkhead for the Premier League this summer, Commons suggests his Irish counterpart Stokes can step into his gaping boots if he can just keep his game simple.

"It is important that Stokesy now tries to take that mantle (of top scorer). We are going to lose Gary, so let's see if he can go and score 20 or 25 goals a season," said Commons after Wednesday night's 3-0 Champions League qualifying win over Cliftonville.

"Certainly other additions to the squad would make us stronger. But there was good link up play from Stokesy on Wednesday.

"He is terrific player when he keeps it simple. He has a tendency to sometimes flick a few things and not get hold of things.

"But he is a top, top striker and I'd say he is more than capable of scoring 20 or 25 goals a season with his head, his left and his right foot."

Since Hooper joined the club in 2010, Stokes has netted 48 goals in 110 appearances whilst Hooper has fired home 82 in 137.
