Romanian club CFR Cluj are believed to be close to signing Gregory Tade from St Johnstone.
The 26-year old French forward reportedly verbally agreed to a Saints contract extension last week but has performed an about-face and is on the verge of signing a three-year deal with the Transylvanian outfit.
"We've heard that Gregory is on his way to Romania but we haven't had anything confirmed yet," new Saints boss Tommy Wright said.
"If he does go it will be disappointing because he told us he'd be signing on again.
"We were waiting for him to come in last week and sign his contract but he didn't.
"We didn't think we needed a striker but, at this stage in the summer, we now might have to find one.
"We were told he was going to take up the option so to learn that might not be the case at this late stage is disappointing.
"But we'll just have to deal with it."
