Club America desperate to succeed on world stage as Club World Cup beckons

Mexican outfit Club America are looking to again be noticed on the world stage.

The Liga MX side host Montreal Impact in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final on Wednesday night before meeting the MLS club in Canada in the return bout next week.

President Ricardo Pelaez hopes that double-header culminates in another successful run in the FIFA Club World Cup in which they finished fourth back in 2006.

"We have the opportunity to transcend on the international stage not only by winning, of course, in CONCACAF, but also by being part of the Club World Cup, and that motivates us a great deal," Pelaez told reporters.

"We want to see what it's like to be part of a Club World Cup and rub shoulders with extraordinary teams. So it would be marvelous.

"But there are two games to be played before that … on the field, we have to run, fight and work hard, because it's not going to be easy."

Club America are expecting a sold-out of crowd of around 105,000 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the first leg against the visiting Impact.
