Chivers backed me to beat his Euro record - Tottenham's Defoe

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has revealed that he was backed by Martin Chivers to break his European goalscoring record on Thursday night.

The 31-year old netted his 23rd goal in European competition in the 2-1 win over Sheriff Tiraspol and admitted that Chivers, who had held the record, spoke to him encouragingly at half-time at White Hart Lane.

"He's a legend, I saw him at half-time," he told ITV4 after scoring from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.

"He said to me keep it going you'll get it. So nice for someone like Martin to say that."

He added: "It was frustrating tonight, I couldn't really get much space.

"I just thought to myself stay patient. To go to the top of the list I'm delighted.

"I was confident, what an opportunity to do it."
