Chipperfield and Basel slump to second Champions League defeat

Swiss Super League champions FC Basel slumped to their second consecutive Champions League defeat overnight.

Australian international Scott Chipperfield was used as a late sub for Basel in their 2-1 loss to last season's runners-up Bayern Munich at St Jakob Park.

Alexander Frei put Basel ahead in the 18th minute before German international Bastian Schweinsteiger converted a 56th minute penalty then grabbed a winner with just one minute remaining.

Chipperfield came on in the 80th minute, replacing Xherdan Shaqiri, but was unable to help his side to a point.Basel on the bottom of Group E with two losses from two matches whilst Bayern Munich sit on top with maximum points from their two outings.

In the other Group E match, Italian club AS Roma got the better of Romanians CFR Cluj 2-1 to go second with a win and a loss, edging Cluj on goal difference.
