Joe Cole claimed England's 'back to basics' policy is the real reason behind their Euro 2008 revival.
The Chelsea midfielder says England have benefited from dropping fancy football in favour of a high-tempo game which overwhelmed Israel and Russia.
He said: "With the results we have had in the last month there is a different atmosphere, but there's a different challenge as well. You have got to be on guard against complacency.
"We can't go out on the pitch and start trying to play like Brazil and flicking the ball about.
"We have to be England and do what we do best, which in the last four qualifying games, we have done. If we do that and guard against complacency we will get the right result.
"We did get ourselves in a mess. We had terrible results last year, but that is done, gone now. The only thing we can do is look forward, and we are lucky that it is still in our hands.
"We are happy and we just want to keep rolling on towards Switzerland."
