Chelsea star Cahill: Spain defeat will not dent England confidence

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill insists that the defeat against Spain will not affect the confidence of the England players.

La Roja dominated possession against the Three Lions in the 2-0 defeat and after the game, manager Roy Hodgson conceded that his side would need to find a way to 'bridge the gap'.

But Cahill believes there is no cause for concern: "There's no reason for any confidence to drain out. You've seen the team, the manager is going to change up the team over the games and get players game time.

"But there's no reason whatsoever why we should be low on confidence after one game.

"We've had a great run and that was our first defeat. But actually coming into this, if we had won the two games then we'd be told we can go on and win the Euros. If we lost them both then it would be the other way.

"I felt it was away from home, they had the ball for long periods but we set up well, defended well.

"I agree that the teams we're playing now are big teams and if we want to do anything in the summer then we're going to have to compete. But we're not the finished article yet.

"Most people will judge us over these games. But there's no reason for anyone to lose any sort of confidence because the performance levels and the way we have approached the qualifying campaign and playing since the World Cup has been positive. This is one game where I don't think we've been outclassed."
