Chelsea captain John Terry had planned to retire from international football after the Euros.

The Sunday Mirror says Terry planned to ­announce his retirement from international football after Euro 2012.

Terry, who is weighing up his ­international future after the FA controversially stripped him of the England captaincy on Friday morning.

Chelsea's decision to write a personal letter to the court last Wednesday to delay his case for allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand until after the tournament appears to have backfired on Terry as it left his England plans in tatters.

The Chelsea skipper had hoped to avoid any controversy over the court case by taking decisions into his own hands and avoiding the controversy that would inevitably follow if he were found guilty.

In a separate development the FA have been working behind the scenes to introduce a code of conduct for players representing England at all levels.

They will produce the draft proposals after Euro 2012 and seek the backing of the England players' committee, the PFA and the FA board as well as the new England manager.
