Chelsea's Schwarzer calls time on Socceroos career

Mark Schwarzer has announced his retirement from international football.

The 41-year old Chelsea goalkeeper has pulled the curtain on a fantastic international career with the Australian national team which spanned two decades.

Former Middlesbrough and Fulham star Schwarzer made 109 appearances for the Socceroos - a national record - and was involved in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Schwarzer, who debuted against Canada back in 1993, was praised by new Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou for what has been a remarkable stint for his beloved country.

"Mark has been a tremendous servant for the National team. He is our most capped Socceroo, has been one of our best performers over a long period of time and he has always remained passionate about playing for Australia," said Postecoglou.

"I know the Australian football community will join me in paying tribute to Mark for everything he's done for the Socceroos."
