Chelsea's Cahill: We did not underestimate Basel

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill insists he and his teammates did not undervalue FC Basel in Wednesday night's Champions League clash.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by the Swiss champions at Stamford Bridge in their opening Group E fixture with some suggestions that the Blues were expecting to win comfortably at home.

Chelsea beat Basel 3-1 in London and 2-1 in Switzerland in the Europa League semi-final last season but Cahill says those results were not even considered ahead of this most recent meeting.

"I don't think so," he told Sky Sports when asked if Chelsea underestimated Basel.

"We played against them twice last year and they are a very good side.

"I think the onus was on us to step it up a gear in the second half and we didn't quite do that, and against any side at this level you will get punished."
