Champions League still the dream for Atletico Madrid - Torres

Fernando Torres has made it vehemently clear that Atletico Madrid's major goal is the UEFA Champions League.

Los Rojiblancos were beaten by local rivals Real Madrid in a penalty shootout in the final in Milan in late May, compounding their devastating extra-time defeat to the same opponents in Lisbon two years prior.

Having placed one hand on the coveted trophy on two occasions, Torres says Atleti are determined to see their fortunes change as they chase the evasive piece of silverware in 2016/17.

“The Champions League has always been the dream for the club," he told LaLiga World courtesy of Atletico Madrid.

“The last few years even more because we touched the glory with our fingers but at the end it was gone.

“We will stand up and work again and work harder than before to be able to lift that trophy for our fans because it is what we have to do.

“We start this week training hard, but it's a long way to the Champions League final and we will see what happens in the season.

“Of course this is something that all Atletico Madrid fans and players wants to get one day."

Torres was speaking ahead of Atletico's trip to Australia for the 2016 International Champions Cup, presented by Audi, which sees them take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, July 29.

Tickets for all three ICC matches, which also includes Italian champions Juventus and A-League giants Melbourne Victory, are available HERE.
