Champions League Semi-Final 1st leg: Man City defeat Real Madrid in pulsating encounter

Man City take a narrow one goal lead into the second leg after a pulsating game ended 4-3 over Real Madrid.

A frenetic first half in which City could have had four or five goals and Real Madrid a couple ended 2-1 for the home side courtesy of two strikes in the opening 11 minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne with the fastest goal ever in a Champions League semi-final struck after just 2 minutes with a diving header from a Riyad Mahrez cross.

On 11 minutes De Bruyne turned provider when his low centre broke kindly for Gabriel Jesus who finished clinically.

At this stage City were making Madrid look sluggish with their pace and movement off the ball. Yet three times City caused their own problems at the back almost gifting the La Liga outfit a way back into the game.

Meanwhile Mahrez elected to shoot when Foden was unmarked in the six yard box. Foden fired a cross shot narrowly wide. Oleksandr Zinchenko then had a shot from distance flash past the post.

But gradually the visitors slowly got back into the game without looking too threatening until Ferland Mendy crossed and Karim Benzema reacted quickest to side foot home.

Moments later City keeper Ederson had to be alert and beat away a fierce shot from Rodrygo. From looking shell shocked Madrid were now back in the game.

City almost began the second half as the first as Mahrez broke clear but hit the post and from the rebound Foden saw his effort cleared off the line byDani Carvajal.

But City were not to be denied and Foden restored their two advantage on 53 minutes. Back came Madrid two minutes later as Vinicius Junior raced half the length of the pitch before finishing superbly.

After a period of calm Aymeric Laporte got on the end of a cross but could only fire straight at Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.

But 17 minutes from time it was number four for the home side. The Romanian referee played advantage as Zinchenko was fouled and the ball fell to Bernardo Silva who blasted in from a tight angle.

But Madrid were proving resilient and were awarded a penalty which Benzema confidently dispatched Panenka style after Laporte handled.

City then had a couple off half chances as they tried to see of the Spaniards again. There was even time for a couple of brief pitch invasions by individuals but the goal feast had ended and a thrilling game drifted to its conclusion.
