CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Ro16: Arsenal give everything but Monaco progress

Monaco are through to the quarter-finals of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League despite a 2-0 loss to Arsenal tonight.

Leonardo Jardim's side were up against it all evening at the Stade Louis II but managed to deny Arsene Wenger's Gunners an all-important third goal, allowing them to move through to the final eight by virtue of the away-goal rule.

Arsenal's 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium late last month came back to haunt them, especially as they conceded in injury-time in London, which ultimately eliminated them from Europe's premier club competition at the initial knockout stage for the fifth year in a row.

Olivier Giroud, who was so poor in the first leg, was given the opportunity to redeem himself and it paid dividends as the Frenchman produced a fine angled finish with his non-preferred right foot in the 36th minute. It was the first goal Monaco had conceded in four matches in the Champions League this season.

The Gunners had Monaco on the hop in the final 15 minutes of the first half and could quite possibly have had a penalty when Alexis Sanchez was clattered in the area but referee Svein Oddvar Moen opted to book him for simulation instead.

Arsenal picked up where they left off in the second half but Monaco were fairly dour in the defensive third to continually keep out the forward forays until substitute Aaron Ramsey rifled home in the 79th minute.

Theo Walcott's initial effort deflected back off the upright allowing the Welsh midfielder to pick his spot and send a side-footer past Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic.

Wenger's men tried everything they could to grab a third goal late but Les Rouges et Blancs held strong to deservedly book their spot in the quarters in the wake of a very strong first leg performance.
