FC Basel have beaten Chelsea for the second time in the Champions League this season.
The Swiss champions, who produced a late show to defeat the Blues 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in September, have repeated the dose at St Jakob-Park but this time with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the closely contested affair when he raced down the right after receiving a long ball from Fabian Schar before firing beyond Petr Cech in the 87th minute.
Jose Mourinho's Blues were unable to get a single shot on target throughout in what could be classified as a flaccid performance but nevertheless, they booked their ticket to the Round of 16 after Steaua Bucharest drew 0-0 with Schalke.
Chelsea meet bottom-placed Steaua on Matchday 6 in southwest London on December 11 meaning they are through regardless of their result and that of the Schalke v Basel meeting on the same date.
