CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Group D: Man City crash out of CL and Europa League

Manchester City not only exit the Champions League after a 1-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund but results elsewhere mean they will miss out on the consolation of a Europa League slot. The Champions of England endured a miserable European campaign following this defeat in Germany, as they failed to win any of their six group games, the first English team to achieve that dubious honour.

Ajax's defeat by Real Madrid meant City would have finished third in Group D and continued in Europe's secondary competition had they beaten the German champions.

But history was against Roberto Mancini's side as Dortmund had never lost at home to English competition in Europe and never looked in danger of surrendering that record tonight.

Dortmund always posed the greater threat, forcing a series of saves from Joe Hart before finally scoring the only goal of the game just before the hour mark.

Julian Schieber sliding in to score from close range after Jakub Blaszczykowski's teasing cross.

For City the pressure will now be on to retain their Premier League crown, not having the distraction of European football, but for Mancini his poor record in Europe as a manager continues.
