Central Coast's Hutchinson admits he wasn't up to Socceroos standard

Central Coast Mariners and Malta midfielder John Hutchinson has admitted that he was not good enough to play for Australia and is looking forward to being a part of the Maltese national team.

Hutchinson is eligible to play for Malta because of family decent and says he does not have any regrets about switching allegiances.

"I hold no grudges with Pim and I don't feel hard done by," Hutchinson said.

"I was involved in a Socceroos camp with the A-League boys at Christmas. I gave it a go and it didn't work out.

"I am 29 and now I have this fantastic opportunity to play for Malta. They are a very small nation in a massive football world and the coach (Dusan Fitzel) is a realist.

"The paperwork is almost done and it's just a case now of the Maltese Government and football department sorting it all out.

"The idea is for me to play for Malta in a friendly against the Czech Republic (in Jablonce on June 5).

"If I do well then I would stay for the World Cup qualifier against Sweden (five days later in Gothenburg)."
