Casiraghi confronts England coach Pearce: He's not a nice person

Italy U21 coach Pierluigi Casiraghi turned on England counterpart Stuart Pearce at the end of last night's 2-2 draw in their U21 European Championships clash.

England could have been 5-0 ahead inside the first half-hour if not for Leroy Lita's wayward finishing and some desperate defending from the Italians.

David Nugent and Lita put England ahead before a scrappy goal from an Italian corner turned the game on it's head in the 35th minute. Casiraghi's charges wrestled control from their opponents and dominated for the remaining hour, with Alberto Aquilani's screamer midway through the second-half bringing the scores level.

England could have nicked the points in the final minutes, but Ashley Young saw his effort tipped onto the crossbar and over.

"The match was a little bit nervous and during the game sometimes it's difficult for the coaches to hold," said Casiraghi, the former Chelsea striker whose career was cut short by injury.

"He is not the nicest person, we exchanged opinions but it's nothing important.

"On the pitch during the game he was not very correct towards myself. There was a just a short exchange of views on the pitch but it was nothing important."

Pearce insisted there was no bad blood between the pair when the match was over after Italy had fought back to 2-2 to keep themselves in the tournament.

"He said 'good luck'," Pearce said.

The result means England will be through to the semi-finals if they win on Sunday against Serbia, who are through to the last four after beating Czech Republic earlier in the evening courtesy of Bosko Jankovic's stoppage-time goal.

"If we win the last game then 2-2 against Italy is a fantastic result," said Pearce. "It was a fantastic spectacle and after the first 20 minutes I thought we might be 5-0 up. It knocked my pipe out.

"I was so proud, they showed guts and determination and you have to give credit to the Italians. It's all to play for now."

Casiraghi added: "It was a bad result. We conceded two goals and it could have been even worse. But we had a good second half and could have changed the result completely."
