Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes tinkering in midfield by Louis van Gaal was the reason for the return in form of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney against Club Brugge.

Rooney scored a hat-trick against the Belgian club in the Champions League qualifier to end his goal drought of close to 900 minutes.

Ander Herrera impressed in the number 10 position in the second half of the game whereas Michael Carrick commandeered the midfield for the Red Devils in their cruise at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

"The big thing for me is that he [Van Gaal] changed personnel in midfield," Shearer told talkSPORT.

"They moved the ball a lot quicker last night and got it further forward quicker.

"They were prepared to gamble with their passes rather than taking the easy option."
