Carragher urges Rodgers to NOT start Gerrard for Liverpool's clash with Man Utd

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has stated that Brendan Rodgers should not start Steven Gerrard in the weekend's blockbuster clash with Manchester United. Despite the absence of Gerrard through injury over the last month or so, Liverpool have enjoyed a brilliant run of five consecutive Premier League victories and their form has catapulted the Reds back into contention for a Champions League place.

As a further boost, Gerrard recently returned to full fitness and came on as a substitute during Liverpool's 1-0 victory over Swansea City on Monday night.

With Gerrard back in contention, it is widely expected that the skipper will be reinstated to the starting line-up - especially with the Reds squaring off against eternal foes Manchester United this weekend.

However, former Liverpool centre-half Carragher believes that Rodgers should not start with Gerrard against United due to the fact that the Reds have been playing ever so well without him in the side.

When asked whether he would bring back Gerrard into the Liverpool XI during Sky Sports' 'Monday Night Football' show, Carragher said: "No I wouldn't. The team is playing well.

"They're on a great run since Steven's been out the team. Unfortunately, and he'll know himself, when you go out the team and they continue on a great run it's hard to get back in.

"It's unfortunate for him but we've all been there towards the end of our careers. There are players playing too well that you can't leave them out."
