Carragher urges Liverpool to buy big name star

Jamie Carragher has urged the Liverpool board to support manager Roy Hodgson in the January market.

Carragher insists Liverpool are not over-reliant on Fernando Torres but conceded they may need a major new signing to ignite Hodgson's faltering era.

He said: "We are only seven or eight games into the new set-up and I have been here before with new managers. People have short memories. They forget that when Rafa Benitez and Gerard Houllier came, their first seasons were difficult.

"Roy should be given the same time they had. Every manager has his own ideas and we have to get used to them.

"The main thing is probably signing as good a player as possible. That could make the real difference."
