Liverpool hero Jamie Carrager feels Newcastle defende Dan Burn is closer to a first England call.

Carragher says it is a case of Burn occupying a competitive left-back position that led to his omission from the latest England squad.

"When you look at the role he plays for Newcastle," Carragher told Sky Sports. "It may be difficult getting him in as a full-back [to the England team], but as a whole when you think of the centre-back problems that England have had in the last couple of years - in terms of certain players with injuries, maybe certain players not playing for their club.

"But when you talk about [Dan Burn potentially at] centre-back and particularly with the defensive record that they've [Newcastle] got right right now, I thought he had a great chance.

"Probably a little bit more difficult at left-back with the players that England have, certainly Luke Shaw in that role."
