Carragher blasts Sterling agent for attempting to increase Liverpool deal

Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has hit out at Raheem Sterling's agent for allegedly trying to improve his client's contract on the eve of a very important match.

The 19-year old England winger is contracted at Anfield until the summer of 2017 but his representative reportedly leaked to the press on Friday that he wanted to increase the wages of the young gun.

It is believed that Sterling is holding out for an improved offer from the Reds which Carragher feels should wait, especially as Brendan Rodgers' side are going through a tough trot with just one win in their past five Premier League outings.

"It's not right, with the poor run Liverpool are on at the moment, to see a story like that the day before a big game," an angry Carragher told talkSPORT ahead of Saturday's home meeting with West Bromwich Albion.

"Liverpool at the moment, I wouldn't say they're on their knees, but they're on a really bad run and if they don't beat West Brom it'll be even worse.

"I never have a problem with the money a player earns in the game, it's just the timing of it.

"I don't really blame him for it, he's a young lad, but hopefully when he's older he'll have more of an influence in these situations and wouldn't allow things like this to happen.

"It's just a distraction he, the team and the manager don't need before a big game tomorrow."
