CARLING CUP WRAP: Premiership teams progressed unscathed into the 3rd round of the Carling Cup with the exception of Blackpool

Blackburn registered a comfortable 3-1 home win over Championship Norwich courtesy of a hat-trick from on-loan striker Mame Diouf. After conceding ten goals in their opening two Premier League games Wigan kept a welcome clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Hartlepool in the North East.

Leyton Orient also failed to trouble a team from the top flight as they went down 2-0 at home to West Brom.

Sunderland eased past League One Colchester at the Stadium of Light, with a brace from Darren Bent seeing them to a 2-0 win.

Stoke overcame Shrewsbury 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium, but had to endure a nervy end as the visitor's scored a late consolation.

Bolton made the long trip to the South Coast and triumphed through Ivan Klasnic's solitary first half strike.

West Ham left it late before ending Football League newcomers Oxford stubborn resistance with an injury time effort from Scott Parker.

Southend travelled to Wolves and took their top flight opponents to extra time at 1-1. But the home side's captain Richard Stearman scored late into additional time to save Wolves blushes.

Blackpool were the main casualties of the night in a dramatic game with the MK Dons at Stadium:MK.

The score at the end of normal time was 3-3 as the Seasiders had to come from behind to take the game into an extra 30 minutes.

But an extra-time goal from Lewis Guy gave the League One outfit victory over their more illustrious opponents.
