Championship Crystal Place dumped Manchester United out of the Carling Cup with a stunning 2-1 extra-time victory at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson chose an inexperienced side to represent United but they proved unable to progress into the semi-final's as the Red Devils experience only their second defeat at home in 43 games in all competitions.
But Palace were good value for their victory and after an uneventful first-half took the lead with a 35 yard screamer from substitute Darren Ambrose.
The host's then took the game into extra time as Federico Macheda won and scored a penalty.
But any thoughts of qualifying for a place in the last four for the sixth occasion in 10 years were quickly extinguished as Ambrose turned provider when his 98th minute free kick was headed home by Glenn Murray.
The Championship outfit then defended heroically for the remainder of extra time for a memorable success.
