CAPITAL ONE CUP WRAP - QF: Sterling hits brace as Liverpool and Tottenham ease through

Liverpool and Tottenham are into the semi-finals of the 2014/15 Capital One Cup courtesy of comfortable victories on Wednesday night.

The Reds and Spurs have joined Chelsea and League One club Sheffield United in the final four of the league cup after beating AFC Bournemouth 3-1 and Newcastle United 4-0 respectively.

At the Goldsands Stadium in Bournemouth, Raheem Sterling netted a double as the Reds got the better of a spirited Cherries outfit who made a game of in the second half thanks to a strike from Dan Gosling.

Sterling headed home a nodded ball from Jordan Henderson in the 20th minute before summer signing Lazar Markovic scored his first goal for the club when calmly slotting through a number of players after Artur Boruc had kept out Philippe Coutinho.

Six minutes into the second half and Sterling had Brendan Rodgers' side cruising when he turned his man in the area before firing beyond Southampton loanee Boruc.

In the 57th minute, ex-Everton midfielder Gosling breathed some life into Bournemouth's performance when he advanced into the area before netting past Reds keeper Brad Jones.

Eddie Howe's side kept coming at Liverpool and almost grabbed a second through Gosling but in the end there was too much work to do to deny the top flight a path through to the semis.

In north London, Tottenham controlled Newcastle to book their spot in the final four with three of their four goals coming in the second half.

Nabil Bentaleb made it 1-0 in the 18th minute when he swooped on an error from Magpies' third-choice keeper Jak Alnwick before Nacer Chadli doubled the advantage just seconds into the second half.

Spurs fan favourite Harry Kane, who came through the club's youth academy, grabbed a third in the 65th minute when finishing off a pass from Andros Townsend before Roberto Soldado slotted home from close range five minutes later to wrap it up.

Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs, who have won eight of their past 12 matches in all competitions, will now get set to take on League One side Sheffield United in the two-legged semi-final while Liverpool will tackle the high-flying Chelsea in their final four clash.
