CAPITAL ONE CUP - QF: Sheffield Utd edge Southampton as Chelsea account for Derby

Sheffield United are through to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup after edging Southampton on Tuesday night.

Nigel Clough's League One Blades have progressed to the final four of the league cup competition courtesy of a narrow 1-0 victory over the Premier League Saints which came via Marc McNulty's 63rd-minute winner.

United were the better of the two sides, forcing Saints keeper Fraser Forster into a number of fine saves, but ultimately it was the error of the England international which handed the home side the lead.

Bob Harris hit a low free-kick which Forster parried but only into the path of a waiting McNulty who bundled over the line from close range.

Southampton saw defender Florin Gardos sent off late in proceedings for hauling down McNulty but the damage had already been done as Ronald Koeman's south coast side slumped to their fifth straight defeat.

Joining the third tier club in the semi-finals is Premier League leaders Chelsea who completed a fairly routine 3-1 victory over ten-man Derby County at iPro Stadium.

Eden Hazard scored the opener in the 23rd minute after playing a nice give-and-go with Cesc Fabregas before evading three Rams defender before firing beyond Lee Grant.

Defender Filipe Luis then added a second early in the second half with a stunning 30-yard free-kick before Derby were given hope in the 71st minute when Craig Bryson curled home from the edge of the area.

Seven minutes later, Jake Buxton was questionably shown a straight red card for pulling back Loic Remy before Andre Schurrle wrapped it up when he slotted home a rebound in the 82nd minute.

Wednesday night sees Tottenham host Newcastle United an in all-Premier League affair 2014/15 Capital One Cup - quarter-finals
