CAPITAL ONE CUP QF: Liverpool dispatch Southampton for six

Liverpool have blitzed Southampton to progress to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup for a record 16th time.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds were irresistible after conceding in the opening minute of the game to eventually beat the Saints 6-1 at St Mary's Stadium in the final eight of the league cup competition.

Sadio Mane put Ronald Koeman's side ahead after just 41 seconds when Ryan Bertrand was given too much space down the left and found him at the far post, allowing the Senegalese forward to head past Adam Bogdan.

But Daniel Sturridge, making his first start since early October, levelled on 25 minutes when he raced onto Joe Allen's lofted ball, beat off Steven Caulker and fired home from a tight angle.

The injury-prone striker then showed why his presence is so crucial to the Reds when adding a second four minutes later. Sturridge latched on to a delightful ball from Emre Can to beat Maarten Stekelenburg with a clinical first-time finish.

On the stroke of half-time, the Merseysiders found themselves with a two-goal advantage thanks to Divock Origi who stuck out a foot to get a slight deflection on Alberto Moreno's blast from just outside the area.

Less than 25 minutes into the second half and the Reds were up 4-1 through Origi who helped himself to his second with a thunderous angled finish from Jordon Ibe's through ball before Ibe rounded out the handful of goals with a powerful low strike after controlling Moreno's cross in the 73rd minute.

To pour more salt into the wounds of the Saints, Liverpool added a sixth in the dying minutes when substitute Brad Smith played a pinpoint cross for the rampaging Origi to head past Stekelenburg to complete his hat-trick.

It was a terrific fightback from Klopp's men who were without the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Christian Benteke while Koeman would be fiercely disappointed with his Saints who had targeted the league cup as a goal for the season.
