CAPITAL ONE CUP: Flamini double sends Arsenal through at expense of Tottenham

Mathieu Flamini scored a rare brace to help Arsenal progress to the Capital One Cup 4th round with a 2-1 win over fierce North London rivals Tottenham.

England striker Harry Kane almost ended his long-awaited spell for a goal inside 15 minutes, but he could not connect with Andros Townsend's cross as Spurs started full of running.

Flamini, making his first start in a Gunners shirt this season, gave Arsenal the lead in the 26th minute, reacting quickly to an Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain shot to poke beyond Michel Vorm.

Both Danny Rose and Kane missed opportunities to equalise for Spurs before the break, as Arsene Wenger's team went in 1-0 up at the interval.

Tottenham began the second 45 with more urgency, as winger Townsend sent a long range attempt wide.

Mauricio Pochettinoi's men managed to equalise in the 56th minute when Calum Chambers deflected a shot from Nacer Chadli into his own net much to the elation of Spurs fans.

The goal sparked life into Pochettino's side, and Kane was only denied in the 65th minute from national compatriot Kierna Gibbs whose header off the line prevented them from making the score-line 2-1

Gibbs' goal-line clearance was to prove pivotal soon after, as Flamini scored his second of the match with 12 minutes remaining with a brilliantly struck volley from outside the area to restore Arsenal's lead, and subsequently win back local bragging rights for the red side of North London.
