Capello has no doubts calling up Newcastle bad boy Carroll

England coach Fabio Capello is happy calling up Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll.

Carroll, 21, is currently on bail for assaulting a former girlfriend on the condition that he lives with Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan until he appears before magistrates on January 10.

But when asked if he thought it was setting the wrong example by selecting Carroll, Capello simply claimed "he is young" and that people make mistakes when they are young.

The coach also seemed to think that Carroll would benefit from being around senior England players who could advise him about the perils of getting into trouble away from football.

Capello said: "I hope that his private life will be better. I hope it will improve.

"He has to understand that he is one player for the senior team and you have to be careful at every moment.

"It is also very important for him to stay in the seniors squad because we have a lot of experienced players who can stay with him and speak with him about the area outside the pitch."

Despite the controversy surrounding his call-up, Capello believes Carroll has a big future. "This season he has exploded," added the England coach.

"Now he is on fire. But if you speak with the players, he is one for the future for England.

"He is a really interesting player. He is good in the air. He has good movement without the ball. He finds space. Technically he is good.

"He is a fighter. For this reason he is good for us. I don't know him very well but I will speak with him when we meet up."
