Campbell's agent slams Arsenal boss Wenger

The agent of Arsenal forward Joel Campbell has hit out at manager Arsene Wenger for the failed transfer of his client.

Campbell's representative Joaquin Batica claims that the Costa Rica international was a target for Portuguese giant Benfica late in the transfer window but Wenger wanted to hold onto him in case he was unable to sign a new striker.

Campbell remained at the Emirates Stadium, which denied him a possible season-long loan or £10million move to Benfica, despite Arsenal clincheing the signature of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United on deadline day.

Batica has since come out and criticised Wenger for not selling Campbell, especially after completing the signing of Welbeck for £16m.

"Benfica fought until the last minute to sign Campbell but the operation didn't happen because, in the last hour, Arsenal decided to keep him," he said.

"Wenger says he did not want to sell him. But if he is not in his plans, then why not allow him to leave?"
