Veteran defender Sol Campbell may start in tonight's Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona the Nou Camp.

Despite having some hamstring soreness, the 35-year old may be thrown into action by manager Arsene Wenger who is without William Gallas for the rest of the season and has been hit by bad news that Alex Song, who can play as a centre-half, will miss.

The Gunners currently have a hole in central defence and it is expected that Campbell will be used ahead of French defender Mikael Silvestre but Wenger said he will wait and see if the ex-Tottenham man is fit enough to start.

"Frankly, if Sol declares himself completely fit he will play," said Wenger. "He has the experience and another opportunity.

"It is a decision I have to make, consulting with him to see how he feels. He was still not completely available in training on Monday. He managed a warm up and then we got him in.

"Ideally I wanted Song available. He's not, so the decision is between Campbell and Silvestre, knowing that the disadvantage with Silvestre and Vermaelen is that it's two left-footed players. The disadvantage of Sol is that it's his second game in four days.

"I will make the decision but he is experienced enough to tell me if he's fit enough or not. I trust him completely to be responsible."
