Burnley striker Ashley Barnes sets out England hopes

Burnley striker Ashley Barnes admits he has England ambitions.

Barnes' grandmother was Austrian and he played for their under-20s. But these days he is very, very English.

He told The Sun: “It was an honour to play for Austria when I was younger but I'm from Bath and, most importantly, I still dream of pulling on an England shirt.

“I look at Jamie Vardy who was 28 when he won his first England cap and went on to win 26 of them, he scored in the European Championships and played at the World Cup.

“I'd like to think I'm a late developer, like Jamie, so why can't I follow his example?

“My ambition is to play for England and the more often Gareth Southgate is watching Tom Heaton, Nick Pope, Joe Hart or James Tarkowski, I have the chance to show him what I'm all about."
