German Football League (DFL) has released information indicating that an average of 41,802 fans witnessed each of the 306 games in the Bundesliga last season making it the most watched league, reports euFootball.BIZ The numbers in the last season are a below the previous season's with there being 102 fans less per game on average. The drop is attributed to a harsh winter and to reduced capacities in Stuttgart and Bremen where reconstruction is ongoing.
Reports on television viewing also suggest that more people may be opting to watch the matches on TV rather than at the stadiums.
Last season matches were scheduled with maximum spread through the weekend to optimize television coverage of individual matches.
So, it is interesting that Sky has reported an 84 per cent increase in viewers since the 2008-2009 season.
Sky spokesperson Ralph Further told Kicker magazine, "The new match schedule has proven to be a success....We are very happy. People are watching more football."
In the 2009-2010 season, it is estimated that a total of 12.79 million fans attended Bundesliga matches.
