Bruce reveals Carroll leaving Newcastle: I told him he needs to play

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce admits that striker Andy Carroll is leaving the club.

The veteran forward failed to live up to the high expectations he set during his early days with the Magpies, before his £35 million move to Liverpool.

But stints at several clubs, including a return to Newcastle, failed to bring success as Carroll struggled to overcome injury problems.

The 32-year-old has no agreement with Newcastle on a new contract.

Bruce said, per Chronicle Live: "He's out of contract. I had a conversation with Andy.

"I think he wants to go and play. I wish the lad all the best.

"I hope it goes for the rest of his career.

"He's certainly been a big help to me in the last couple of years, that's for sure."
