Brisbane Roar may struggle to keep van Dijk

Brisbane Roar are coming to terms with the fact they may struggle to keep star striker Sergio van Dijk at the club. The Dutchman has been linked with incoming A-League franchise Melbourne Heart as well as other clubs and is out of contract with the Roar at the end of the current season.

Roar coach Ange Postecoglou says the club is facing the fact that their all-time leading scorer may be on the move purely because they will not be able to afford him.

"The reality is that Sergio van Dijk in the open market is worth a lot more than what we're going to pay him," Postecoglou said.

"I'd love for him to stay around and we're working really hard to try to keep him here, but we work under the same restrictions as everybody else with the salary cap."

Despite this, Postecoglou was hopeful the former FC Emmen man would hang around at Suncorp Stadium if of course he was going to remain in the A-League.

"But our talks are progressing. I've been very impressed since the day I got here with his attitude, his character and there's no doubt about his ability on the pitch," he added.

"I'd like to think that if he stayed in the A-League it would be with us."
